‘When will the whisky be ready?’ has fast become the most frequent question we hear in the visitor centre (not to mention at the shops, the garage, nursery pick-up, in the queue for the post office…), closely  followed by ‘how do I get my hands on a bottle’. While we can’t answer that first question just yet, we are super excited to let you know the answer to the second… Membership of Uibhisteach, our whisky founders club.

(Uibhisteach, hard to pronounce but easy to define - a person from Uist. We tried to write a phonetic pronunciation guide but it was causing more debate than English whisky, so please enjoy this helpful link) 

When the beautiful spirit that is currently flowing from our stills is finally ready, the very first, very limited edition bottles of Uist whisky will be winging their way exclusively to members of our Founders Club while the rest of the world is still forming an orderly queue for the public release.

Our small team of talented distillers are busy working their magic, filling a cask a day with the spirit that captures the unique flavours and heritage of our machair grown bere barley. Many of those year one casks belong to members of the founders club, those intrepid whisky adventurers who put their name to Uist whisky before the first barley was even planted. More still will be put aside, left to gently age in our quiet stables, kept cool by thick stone walls and salty sea air whistling in from the Atlantic until the time is just right for bottling.

That leaves a small number of very special casks destined for our first release, the one that will come as soon as the spirit tastes ready. It is for those of you who want to get your hands on one of these first ever bottles that Uibhisteach exists. 

While we will of course be releasing bottles of Uist whisky year on year, there will only be one first release. Limited in numbers by our small production runs and slow growing heritage grain, it will only be available to Founders Club members. 

Membership is available at two levels, depending on just how many exclusive bottlings you would like to get your hands on. While you’re going to have to wait a few years for the good stuff, we will be sending you out an exclusive membership t-shirt to show off your excellent taste and a founders glass to keep a spot in your whisky cabinet warm for that first bottle very soon. 

It’s an act of incredible faith (and patience) to invest now in a bottle of whisky that you won’t receive for several years, and it is the community of dedicated whisky fans and supporters of North Uist Distillery that have and continue to make our journey possible.
